Could You Recognize A STROKE?

Me on SoapboxOne of my daughter’s friends has just become a nurse and she sent this to me. It is from an email that has been circulating. I updated it with a new symptom to identify if someone is having a STROKE and it is the tongue.

This was the story attached to get people’s attention:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) …she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the afternoon.

Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. No one knew the signs.

Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would have had a chance. Some stroke victims don’t die but because treatment was delayed, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
Many neurologists say that if they can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours the chances of totally reversing the effects of a stroke is almost 80%…many times totally. The trick is getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within that 3 hour window, which is tough.

Family and Friends can help by knowing how to RECOGNIZE A STROKE

the 4 Ways to Recognize STROKE Symptoms!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking Four simple questions:

Face          *Ask the individual to SMILE.

Arms         *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

Speech     *Ask him to say a simple sentence coherently like: CHICKEN SOUP IS GOOD.

Tongue     *Ask him to stick out his tongue check if CROOKED OR TO ONE SIDE.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks,

call emergency number 911

immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Ok So you now know that a Stroke has a new indicator! There is a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue:
